Two dates in one weekend?  Wow!  I’m coming to Minneapolis!”  Kelly let out a low whistle.  I felt awful about not keeping up with my communication with Kelly as much as I should have after I moved.  So, on Thursday during dinner I resolved to actually call her instead of just texting and Facebooking.  I had given her the lowdown on my upcoming dates with Theo and Eric.  To be honest, when I agreed to the date with Theo I wasn’t really thinking about how I was going out with Eric the night before.

“It’s totally fine,” Kelly reassured me.  I could hear the the honking and rush of traffic as she crossed the street, and I knew she had just left the the subway station and was near her apartment without even asking.  “You can go out with a hundred men at a time if you want, as long as they don’t think you are committed to them.”

“I don’t know what Eric thinks we are.”  I said, feeling a pang of guilt.  Eric had his few quirks, but overall he was a good guy who really liked me.  Parts of him were really starting to grow on me, like how he didn’t stay mad after I cancelled Valentine’s Day plans with him at the last minute, and how he would text me daily to see how I was doing, and send me cute pictures of puppies.  He just had a laid back, easygoing attitude that was nice to be around sometimes.

“Well, unless you two talk about it, you are as free as a bird!”  I could almost see Kelly emphasizing her declaration by slapping her hand on her leg like she always does.  “Besides, you are young and in a new city!  Go out!  Meet more men!  What’s stopping you?  Hang on a minute.”  I waited as Kelly put in her dinner order.  I looked down at my own dinner, which was leftover Indian food from lunch that I had microwaved.  I sighed, thinking about all the cheap takeout places in New York that I missed so dearly.

Coming back to the phone, Kelly went on.  “Besides, from your description, Theo sounds too…too…perfect.  Nobody can be that good.  He’s got to have a felony or at least 4 kids he isn’t paying child support on that he isn’t telling you about.”

I snorted with laughter.  “Not all men are like that, Kelly.  Just yours.”  Kelly always met the worst men in NYC.  Like the guy she dated for 2 months this fall.  Kelly only found out about his live in girlfriend when she came home early from a business trip and saw Kelly and the guy in her apartment, spooning on the couch while watching Kelly’s favorite movie, The Notebook.  Kelly barely had time to grab her shoes and purse to run out the door while screaming, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know!”  before the girlfriend’s started throwing books at her.   Or the 37 year old man from the office building across from her work who took her out for coffee one morning and declared her to be “the one” before their drinks were even finished.  He even asked if she had time to meet his mom that weekend.

Kelly laughed in her deep, low chuckle.  “Yeah, maybe I’m getting jaded.  But still.  I think I have a point.  Anyway, I got to get going here.  Let me know how the dates go?”  I agreed and hung up the phone, smiling.

On Friday night, Theo texted me while I was curling my hair to in preparation for my date with Eric.  My hair can only hold a curl for about 45 minutes, but I bought some new hair spray for $9 this weekend so I figured it was worth at try.

Looking forward to tomorrow!  I made us reservations at my favorite restaurant.  Hey, can I get your address so I know where to pick you up? :)

Feeling guilty for primping myself for one man while making plans with another, I wrote back.

Favorite place?  Ok, can’t wait to check it out then!  I added Jessie’s address and a smiley face to match his, and hit send.

I’ll be there at 7!  Hope you had a great Friday, I’m beat!

Our texting went back and forth for a few rounds as I got ready.  Smiling at his text about a crazy applicant he had to deal with today, I pulled on my slouchy gray boots.  Just then I got a text from Eric, saying he was outside.

Ok, be right down!  I wrote back quickly.

A text from Theo popped up almost immediately.  Be right down?  LOL…

Shite, I had sent it to the wrong person!  I hurried and texted Eric back and answered Theo again as I ran to the elevator.

Sorry!  Wrong person.  I’m heading out with a friend tonight to unwind from a long week!

Sounds fun!  I’m heading out tonight too.  Where are you going?

Groaning, I hesitated as I stepped out of the elevator.  I did NOT want Theo to come looking for us.  Truthfully, I wrote back.  I don’t really know!  I’m new here, so I am just following along tonight.

Theo texted back right as I hit the sidewalk and scanned for Eric’s car.  I knew I wouldn’t be able to hold of reading it for the length of time it’d take us to get to where we were going,  so I took a quick peak as I walked to the car.

Thankfully Theo didn’t find that suspicious. Ha – true.  Well, shoot me a text when you figure it out.  If we are in the same area, I’d love to meet up for a few minutes and buy you a drink.  :)

I had about 3 seconds to write back before I got into Eric’s car.  Will do!  Looking forward to tomorrow either way!

Shoving my phone back into my purse, I opened the car door and slide in.  “Hi Eric!”

Eric leaned over to give me a long kiss.  “Hey pretty lady.  It’s been awhile.”

Pulling away from the curb, he asked casually, “So, who were you texting?”  I flushed.  Did he know I was texting another man?  Was I acting guilty?

“Just Jessie.  She was wondering where I was going tonight.”  I answered back, just as casually.  Luckily again, Eric didn’t ask any more and we just talked about how our week went until Eric pulled up to a small bar near campus.   With its chipped paint and peeling sign, it looked more than a little worn down.  “Ummm, Eric?  Where are we?”  I asked, doubting this place was even safe.

“Don’t worry.”  We got out of the car and he grabbed my hand and laced his fingers through mine.  “We’re having a celebration for a couple of our classmates, and this is place is a ton of fun.”

We entered the bar, with more than a little trepidation on my part.  Inside, I was relieved to see that it was a just a small bar with live music playing loudly and a ton of people from his law school gathered on one side.

Putting his arm around my waist and squeezing me tight, Eric introduced me to a few people in the crowd.  He planted a kiss on my cheek and went to the bar to grab us a drink.  I hate standing alone in big crowds when I know absolutely nobody.  I pretended to busy myself with my phone until I spied Katy drinking out of a clear plastic Solo cup.

I made my way over to her.  “Katy!  What are you doing here?”  I felt idiotic as soon as the words left my mouth.  Katy and Eric were classmates, of course it shouldn’t be a surprise she was here.

“Just celebrating along with everyone else.   Thank  God you came.  I hate this place.  Such a dump.”  I agreed, it really didn’t look like her type of place at all.  Katy didn’t seem very thrilled to be here.

Spotting Eric weaving his way through the crowd holding two plastic cups, she said, “I shouldn’t be surprised though.  Eric talks about you all the time.”  She arched her eyebrow.  “I didn’t realize you two were getting so close.”

“I’ll tell you later.”  I hissed as Eric returned to my side.

The crowd grew bigger and bigger all night, and at at one point Katy and I lost track of Eric.  “Good, now tell me everything.”  Katy pulled me aside to a quiet corner.

“We’ve seen each other a few times and text most days, but it’s nothing serious.”  I confided in her.

Katy shook her head.  “That’s what I thought!  But to to hear him talk, he’s totally into you.”  We looked over at Eric who was on his fifth drinking and talking to one of his professors.   “How do you feel about him?  And what ever happened to the guy from the club?”

“Eric?  He’s a nice guy.  I like him, but I’m still figuring out just how much.”

Katy took a sip of the drink she’d been nursing all night and grimaced.  “I hate cheap vodka.  What the guy from the club?” She reminded me.  “Have you seen him since?”

“Theo?”  I looked around to make sure Eric was nowhere in sight.  I spotted him walking to the bar.  “We’re going out tomorrow night.”  I admitted.

Katy’s eyes widened in appreciation.  “Nice.  Keep your options open, girl!”

Eric returned a minute later, holding another beer.  “Sorry, I wasn’t sure if you wanted anything,” he said, giving me a sloppy kiss.  I wiped my mouth off as Katy excused herself to go to the bathroom.

“Finally, a minute alone.”  Eric said, giving me another kiss.  Setting his cup down on a nearby table, he pushed me against the wall and kissed me again, this one longer and deeper, pinning my legs in between his.  I kissed him back, but couldn’t help eyeing everyone around us.  Was Eric always this into PDAs?  We had to be around at least 50 people, including more than one of of his professors.

“What do you say we go back to my place?”  He whispered in my ear.  I hesitated.  Eric was so drunk and I didn’t know how I felt about dating two guys and sleeping with one.  How did that even work, anyway?

Just then Katy reappeared.  “Ready to go, Maddie?”  she asked brightly giving me a knowing look from behind Eric’s back.

“Go?  Where would you be going?”  Eric said a little rudely.

“Oh, I know you’ve had a bit too much to drink, so I offered to give Maddie a ride home tonight!”  Katy said brightly.

“She’ll come home with me.”  Eric replied, authoritatively.

“And how do you even plan on getting home?”  Katy gave Eric a withering look.

Eric eyed Katy back.  “Walk.  I’ll grab my car tomorrow.”

Katy shook her head.  “You’re too drunk to drive, and I’m NOT letting Maddie walk almost a mile in zero degree weather at midnight!  Eric, I suggest a cab for you so we don’t read about you in the papers tomorrow.  Come on, Maddie, let’s go.”  I gave Eric a quick kiss goodbye and with that, Katy pulled me by the hand out the door.

Once we were in her car, she said “I hope I didn’t overstep my boundaries.  I just didn’t want to see you leave with him in that condition.  Not to mention I’d never let you walk home in the dark in this weather!”

I grinned at her.   “No worries at all.”

“Hey, you hungry?  Let’s get some late night nosh.  There’s a great Chinese restaurant just down the road.”

“You’re on!”  I said, smiling in the dark.  Katy was going to be an awesome friend, I could tell.

I don’t really like Eric. Yeah, I mean if they haven’t spoken about the relationship “status” or wha they are expecting of each other regarding dating others, then she can see who she wants when she wants. However, I really like Theo for her. Although he seems perfect, there’s nothing wrong with that. Maybe he really just is a genuine, sweet guy. And just like Hope, above, I scanned ahead to make sure she didn’t run into Theo. i was thinking that’s where it was going, and I’m so glad it didn’t!! I don’t want anything messed up with Theo, for my own selfish enjoyment purposes :)

  7. I love the new layout and polka dots are my absolute favorite :) I can’t wait to see what happens with Theo – I feel like Eric might run into them when they’re out on Saturday or something.

First of all, when I first clicked on, I thought I was on the wrong site for a second. (: Cute, but a little surprising.

Also, Eric seems like he could easily switch from puppy dog nice to overbearing & rude. I don’t trust him. :-/ I’m already team Theo. (:

I just had enough with the old look – it was boring and not very user friendly! Hope you like the new one as much as I do!

I love this blog!! I can’t wait to read about her date with Theo!! He seems pretty perfect. I’m not a big Eric fan, he just seems too overbearing and needy. Can’t wait for the next post!! Xo

  14. Lee says:

Awesome new blog format! And great story as always! I was holding my breathe, hoping that theo wasn’t going to pop up while those two were on a date! I really wish maddie will just dump eric! he’s just… I don’t know, he just doesn’t seem like he’d be a good boyfriend. I think it’s time eric and maddie had the talk tho. from how eric is acting, i think he believes they are exclusive. and i’m concerned to how he will act when he finds out maddie is seeing other people.
Glad katy has maddie’s back tho! she seems like a good person.

You have an amazing talent. Your blog, in my opinion, is the most realistic and relatable. I’m glad she didn’t run into Theo again. As good of a read it might have been, it’s more believable that she didn’t. I also love the adjusting period, and her life not falling into place instantly like a fairy tale or her emailing the ex back when her cousin confiscated her phone….. The heartbreak of him quickly moving on after saying it was his job that kept him too busy to date. Very entertaining and very relatable. Thank yoy!

    • minneapplegirl14 says:

Wow, thank you so much for the awesome compliment!

Your point about being realistic and relatable is one I really try to strive for, and create a good balance between that and being a fun read. Because, well, I like reading stories where I can relate to the person in the story too! Glad to hear you like it! :)

  16. Pamela says:

uggggh Eric gives me the creeps!

  17. Franca says:

Like everyone else, I love the new format.

I was worried that Eric & Maddie were going to run into Theo. I’m so happy they didn’t. I’m also glad that Katy was there. Maddie seriously needed rescuing.

Sooo looking forward to Theo & Maddie’s date. I’m also curious how Jessie’s doing.

  18. Karen says:

This blog is getting better and better!

And I love the new format, too!
